COVID-19 HEALTH & SAFETY NOTICE

Hair loss can affect both our physical and mental well-being. At truMD, we believe in finding innovative solutions to the real-world problems our patients face day-to-day.

Balding or thinning hair effects adult men and women of all ages. Often, they are told it is part of aging or just their genetics, but that does not have to be the case.

Science and innovation has now advanced to a point where we can now understand how to treat hair loss based on its specific cause, giving us more effective results.

There are options that can help stop hair loss/thinning and even regrow dormant hair follicles that have recently stopped growing. The most important factor in restoring thinning hair is to understand the root cause. There are various reasons why blood/nutrient supply to the hair diminishes, thus understanding why your hair is thinning/balding will give us the best chance of treating it properly and restoring your hair.

HAIR LOSS 101

Hair follicles are nourished at their base, where the root of the hair lies. The root is surrounded by tiny blood vessels that feed the hair and help it grow. Over time, the blood supply (and thus the supply of nutrients) to the hair diminishes and the hair follicle begins to thin and eventually stops growing. This is now a dormant root, but given enough time, the root will eventually die and cease to exist in that area completely. Once this stage is reached, the only option (for now) is hair restoration surgery. But there are several options to prevent you from getting to that point which we offer in our office.

HOW IT WORKS

Poor blood flow, for example can be treated with a topical medication the will dilate blood vessels and restore the blood flow to the roots of your hair. Male pattern baldness is usually the result of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is a derivative of testosterone. This can be treated with either topical or oral DHT blockers. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is another great option for hair restoration that is currently being studied but has shown promising results. PRP involves drawing your blood and spinning it in a centrifuge until the golden yellow nutrient rich section is separated from the red blood cells. We then use a tiny needle to inject the nutrient rich portion (the PRP) back into the scalp in order to help restore and thicken hair.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
At truMD, our focus is on using innovations in integrative medicine and technology to enrich the lives of our patients.

THE RESULTS

Results of hair restoration are notoriously difficult to predict. What works for one person may not work for another. This is why understanding the cause of your hair loss/thinning and then specifying treatment on an individual level is so important. The imperative part is to start treatment early, preventing the death of a hair root that could have otherwise been restored and productive.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DOES PRP HURT?

In short, a little. We use tiny needles (similar to botox) to inject in the balding areas of the scalp. Thankfully, the scalp is not a particularly sensitive area of the body.

IS PRP SAFE?

Very. Aside from the risks associated with injections in general (infection or bleeding) which are minimal, we are literally injecting your own blood back into you. This means that reactions to the “medication” are virtually impossible.
